Get to know Amalie and Amalie
How did your passion for design and fashion begin?
– I’ve been interested in fashion since I was a child and have always loved expressing myself through clothes. My interest in creating garments started when I was 15, when my grandmother taught me how to sew. Since then, my passion for sewing has grown every year, and it truly became my big passion when I moved to Milan in 2023 to study a one-year program in fashion. And in the autumn of 2025, I will finally begin my bachelor’s degree in fashion design at Marangoni Milan.
What inspires you right now – both within and outside the fashion world?
– Over the past year, I’ve developed my own small brand (Holén) – an idea that grew from a thought I had earlier this year. I draw a lot of inspiration from the 1920s and the art deco aesthetic. I admire brands that dare to stay true to their own style and identity instead of jumping on short-lived trends. In 2025, I believe fashion is about finding your own aesthetic, avoiding overproduction, and instead creating clothing with meaning. I’m also inspired by brands that innovate and invest in recycled materials and redesign.
What do you notice the most as a difference between your generation and the previous ones, when it comes to style, consumption, and attitudes?
– My grandmother had a completely different relationship to clothing than many people today. When she changed curtains, she would sew garments from the old fabric instead of throwing it away. That generation knew how to repair and create something new from what they already had. My generation has long been marked by a throwaway culture, but I see a positive shift: more people are learning to sew, and second-hand shopping is more popular than ever. I hope we will become even more conscious of the origins of our clothes.
How do you style denim this autumn – and what’s your tip for giving it a personal touch?
– A personal touch I love is using vintage brooches in unexpected places. For example, on baggy jeans, where I gather the fabric at the bottom of the leg and fasten it with a brooch. It gives the outfit a unique twist and can be varied in many ways.
If your jeans could tell one story about you – what would it be?
– They would say they’ve been with me everywhere: at school, at work, on vintage hunts, and out with friends. I love a pair of jeans with a bit of wear, because it tells a story of a life lived. They would say I made a conscious choice when I bought them and that I knew my style so well that I was certain I’d wear them for many years.
What’s your best “fashion emergency” trick on the go?
– A silk scarf! It takes up no space but can be used as a top, a belt on jeans, a hair accessory, or a headscarf – the possibilities are endless.

How did your passion for design and fashion begin?
– My interest in design and fashion started when I began sewing. At first, I thought it was fun to experiment with different types of materials and textures. I’ve made clothes from all kinds of things. Many people still remember when I sewed a prom dress out of IKEA bags in middle school. Today, I mostly create everyday garments, focusing on quality fabrics and good fit.
What inspires you right now – both within and outside the fashion world?
– I think it’s exciting to see how much you can save by making things yourself. In second-hand stores and apps, you can get big discounts if an item is slightly damaged. Small holes, pants that are too long, or missing buttons are easy to fix. By shopping this way, you can build a strong wardrobe without spending huge amounts of money.
What’s the coolest thing you’ve ever sewn or repaired on a denim piece?
– Once, I had to repair a pair of jeans that had ripped completely across the crotch. I spent quite a bit of time combining different thread colors to match the denim’s wash. The result turned out great – the repair was almost invisible, and the jeans are still being worn. After learning that technique for patching holes, I’ve been able to give new life to many other pairs as well.
If you could give one denim trend eternal life, which would it be?
– I like a pair of good-quality jeans that last for a long time. A normal fit, regular length, not too tight and not too loose. They’re timeless – and they go with everything!
How are you styling denim this autumn – and what’s your tip for giving it a personal touch?
– This autumn, I’m styling denim with a dark brown leather jacket and matching boots.
What’s your best “fashion emergency” trick on the go?
– I almost always carry safety pins and a small sewing kit in my bag. It has saved both me and my friends many times. I especially remember one occasion at a ball when the bow tie of the person sitting across from me came undone. It was fun to be able to come to the rescue.
